Joan Romaine, LGPC

Practicing since: 2018
Life can be difficult to navigate, and at times we all need support from someone who truly understands.
Joan Romaine holds a dual Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Advertising from Syracuse University, a Master of Public Health from The George Washington University, and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Loyola University Maryland. She is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and an active member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), ACPE, Chi Sigma Iota, and Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health.
Joan believes deeply in the power of compassionate, collaborative counseling and views the counseling relationship as a sacred space—one in which she is honored to walk alongside clients and provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment where they can fully explore their thoughts, emotions, and lived experiences. Drawing from both clinical training and lived experience, she is passionate about helping clients find healing, hope, and meaningful change.
Joan is dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and empowering individuals to reconnect with their inner strengths. She understands that life’s challenges—such as trauma, loss, and chronic stress—can impact overall well-being, and she considers it a privilege to walk alongside clients as they rebuild confidence, restore balance, and rediscover a sense of purpose.
Her approach is client-centered, holistic, and evidence-based. With training in pastoral counseling, Joan values cura personalis—care for the whole person—and, when relevant and desired by the client, incorporates thoughtful attention to spiritual or religious beliefs as part of the therapeutic process. She utilizes an eclectic therapeutic approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Gottman, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Joan also emphasizes psychoeducation and practical skill-building—specifically healthy boundary setting, improved communication, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and coping strategies—all tools that clients can apply in their everyday lives.
If you are ready to take the next step in your healing journey, Joan strives to create a warm, caring, and trusting environment where clients feel accepted, supported, and safe to share their stories—along with their challenges, hopes, wants, and needs for their lives.
Joan is licensed in the state of Maryland (License #LGP10872) and practices under the clinical supervision of Patricia Itzel, LCSW-C (MD License #13811).
