Dorothy Underwood, LMSW

Practicing since: 2023

Dorothy Underwood graduated from Catholic University of America with a Master’s degree in Social Work. She was inspired to become a mental health counselor to make sure people know they are worth more than their diagnosis. She hopes to help individuals overcome their struggles and discover their true purpose in life.

Dorothy’s approach to treatment is client-centered, allowing the client to take an active role in their therapeutic process. Her goal is to meet everyone where they are and empower them to guide the direction of their sessions. Dorothy incorporates a variety of techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, play therapy techniques, and problem-solving strategies.

Clients will experience a sense of control over their struggles in sessions with Dorothy. Her goal is for clients to learn effective coping strategies, develop positive thinking patterns, and recognize how their choices influence their actions. Ultimately, Dorothy hopes they continue their growth beyond sessions and feel confident in their ability to navigate life’s challenges.  A quote that continues to motivate Dorothy’s work comes from 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Dorothy Underwood, LMSW, is licensed in the state of Maryland (#33973) and under the clinical supervision of Stefanie Plitt, LCSW-C (#16101).
